We only send emails out now and again and we're a start up so don't
want to commit to a contract. Is there such thing as a pay as you go
type email service provider?

Kind of like a time card service? I don't know about that but I manage
an Email marketing service for a law firm and we use constant contact.
The bill is monthly and you can cancle at any time.
